Tough glass – lots of class

Utopia’s new Revival craft beer glass is toughened up

Toughened (also known as tempered) glassware for drinks is a necessity for pubs, bars, hotels and other venues that care about safety – but having toughened glasses that doesn’t mean they have to compromise on style. Far from it – in fact, Utopia’s new toughened Revival 20oz is a perfect craft beer glass suitable for the modern hospitality trade. Its wide body and stout form give a distinctive touch of style to a beer or cider serve and it stacks perfectly when not in use.

With the launch of the new toughened Revival 20oz Utopia are demonstrating their expertise and commitment to supplying safe glassware to the hospitality industry. The new glass has a large bowl and narrow top to trap the beer’s aromatics while the flared lip is perfect for the beer drinking experience. The design also enhances proper head retention.

So what makes tempered glass so tough? In the manufacturing process the glass is rapidly cooled to lock as much stress as possible into the surface. This stress acts as a protective skin and makes the glass more resistant to damage. The result is toughened glass which is up to five times stronger than standard glass.

If a toughened glass breaks it shatters into small pieces, similar to when a car windscreen breaks, rather than into sharp shards. This ensures that the risks of serious cut injury are significantly minimised, and no whole portion of the glass would be left in the hand. Especially useful in sites where there is a possibility of violent behaviour.

When toughened glassware is looked after properly it will give a very long service life. Utopia says there are a few simple rules to follow, however. Avoid scratching, abrasions and harsh contact with metal objects. Also avoid extreme thermal shock, for example after washing do not cool rapidly with cold water or fill a hot glass with chilled liquid.

Alongside the new Revival design, Utopia has a wide selection of styles available in toughened glass.
