Byzantium has food prep covered

Speedwrap cling film dispenser speeds up kitchen in busy Bristol restaurant

Byzantium is one of Bristol’s most unusual bar restaurants. It’s been described as ‘extravagantly hedonistic’. While exotic surroundings and entertainment, including belly dancers and magicians, attract headlines and customers, it is the consistent quality of the food that has kept the venue so busy.

The menu is all about big flavours and local ingredients. The emphasis on fresh foods puts pressure on kitchen staff – especially when it comes to food prep.

Robert Curtis, Head Chef at Byzantium, is a convert to the Speedwrap system, the new dispenser for cling film and aluminium foils designed specifically for the foodservice sector by Prowrap. As a busy restaurant and party venue the Byzantium kitchen has to work flat out and Speedwrap fits in well in this tough environment, helping to keep the kitchen running smoothly.

“We prep up food in advance and cover all trays and bowls with Prowrap cling film as it’s fast, hygienic and easy to use. The Speedwrap dispenser is excellent, reducing wastage and eliminating the annoying fiddling about trying to find the end of the roll. It’s definitely better than any other dispenser I’ve tried. Plus the hinged lid a real bonus as it is sturdy and, unlike some dispensers, it is fixed so doesn’t keep falling off.”

Speedwrap refill rolls are supplied on easyfit cores making them simple to load and allowing the cling film or foil to pull out very smoothly. Inside the dispenser the rolls are protected from knocks and food spills, eliminating wastage and ensuring good standards of hygiene are maintained.

“Alongside the Speedwrap dispenser we still use traditional cling film in cutter boxes for some tasks,” Robert continues. “For example, we buy the thicker Prowrap Premium cling film for certain types of food storage. But to be honest, for day to day use you can’t beat the speed and ease of the Speedwrap system.”

The Speedwrap dispensers are designed to accommodate refill rolls in standard widths of 300 or 450mm.

Prowrap is the catering division of Wrapex Limited. The Prowrap range of cling film, aluminium foil, baking parchment and accessories, including the Speedwrap dispensers, is available via distributors and cash and carry outlets. Notes for editors

  • The Prowrap commercial range has been developed exclusively for the foodservice and bakery sectors and is produced in Wrapex’s manufacturing and warehousing facility in Bristol.
  • Prepare, Protect, Preserve: Prowrap leads the film & foil market in terms of innovation and environment-awareness.  For example, its Speedwrap dispenser, launched as part of its ‘Prepare, Protect, Preserve’ initiative, offers the most compact, clean, fast and efficient way to handle foil and cling film in busy kitchens – with absolutely no scrunching!  Meanwhile the Prowrap ‘green’ outer packaging solution minimises the amount of material used to pack its products, whilst still protecting them effectively.
  • The total UK ‘film & foil’ market is worth around £100million per year.
