Norfolk’s iconic Gothic hall to host latest Jane Austen reading for charity
The exotic environs of Cromer Hall – the inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle’s Baskerville Hall – will be the setting for a dramatised reading from Sense and Sensibility, one of Jane Austen’s most loved novels.
The reading takes place on Sunday 2nd August from 3pm to 5pm and, along with the theatrics, guests will be treated to a sumptuous cream tea and live classical music, with tickets costing £25. There will also be a themed raffle. The event, in aid of Norfolk-based charity Hospice Ethiopia UK, is being held at the privately owned hall by kind permission of the owners, Benje and Dido Cabbell Manners. It gives people lucky enough to get a ticket the opportunity to visit this masterpiece of the Gothic revival style, built in 1829, which is not usually open to the public.
Sense and Sensibility is the fourth of Hospice Ethiopia’s annual Jane Austen readings, the previous three having been popular sell outs featuring a mix of semi professional and amateur actors, directors and writers.
“We are so grateful to Benje and Dido for lending us their wonderful home,” says Sue Mumford MBE, chair of Hospice Ethiopia UK. “It’s an ideal venue for drama providing a stunning, iconic backdrop. Events like this are so important for Hospice Ethiopia, not only for fund raising but also to help raise our profile and get our message across.”
Hospice Ethiopia is based in Addis Ababa and helps hundreds of desperate people with medical, financial and mental support. Without Hospice Ethiopia, they would have no one. Plus, as a centre of palliative care excellence, Hospice Ethiopia trains medics to bring relief to thousands more patients, in Ethiopia and beyond. Every penny raised by Hospice Ethiopia UK goes directly to help the team in Addis Ababa.
Tickets for Sense and Sensibility at Cromer Hall are strictly limited. To book, or get more information, contact info@hospiceethiopia.org.uk or ring Sue Mumford on 01263 768699.
