CNP help in Three Peaks Challenge

From The Midlands To The Mountains – Team Sets Sights On Three Peaks Challenge
CNP Products take pre-challenge training to new levels

Ben Burge (right) trains for Three Peaks challenge Ben Burge 32, from Corby, Northamptonshire, has put together a team of six to do The Three Peaks Challenge on 30th-31st May, 2009 and raise some money for Bladder Exstrophy Research, a rare condition in which babies are born with their bladder outside the body.

The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks in England (Scafell Pike – 978m), Wales (Snowdon – 1085m) and Scotland (Ben Nevis -1344m) within 24 hours including travelling time.

"We decided to do the Three Peaks after some friends of ours failed to complete it within the 24 hours last year. They took approximately 25 hours to do it," says Ben. "We know we can beat that and are aiming for 24 hours."

Ben’s team is headed by himself and Jamie Wootton, his business partner, in their building firm JCB Projects Ltd. Most other members of the team are also from the building trade, so all had a good level of fitness before they started training. Ben himself was an Signaler in the Army for three years and another member of the team, Shaun Scott, was in the Parachute Regiment.

"Being based in the East Midlands it isn’t easy to find hills to climb," says Ben. "But there are varying gradients at Pitsford Reservoir and ‘The Slips’ in Finedon, we train as much as we can on those."

When they started serious training about six weeks ago the aches and pains set in and they realised they were going to have to improve their fitness considerably if they were to stand any chance of doing the Three Peaks in less than 24 hours.

They are now using CNP Professional Pro Energy, Pro Hydrate and Pro Recover during training. Plus they have a stash of CNP Pro Energy Bars ready to boost flagging energy levels on the big day. CNP is a specialist in sports nutrition products and has a range of supplements especially developed for endurance athletes.

"We’ve noticed a big difference in our performance since we started using the CNP products," says Ben. "We recover much more quickly and by taking the Pro Energy before a big training session we can step up a gear and keep going for longer.

"The training we are doing now is actually very similar to our army training. We do a lot of cross country running and force marching. Plus we’re relying on our good map-reading skills to gain us some extra time as we don’t plan to run up the mountains – just down them."

Money can be donated via Ben’s page on Just Giving www.justgiving.com/benburge where there are also more details of the other Ben who has inspired the team to take part in the Three Peaks Challenge.
