New Weavers’ Way Guide is full of ‘fascinating insights’

Bittern Books distributes latest guide from paramedic and passionate walker Joe Jackson

Joe Jackson’s latest guide book is all about Norfolk’s Weavers’ Way.  Distributed by Bittern Books, it’s a not just a route guide, it’s also an atmospheric collection of photos and facts about the wildlife and history of points along the path, so that users can really get the most out of their exploration.

When he’s not writing walking guides Joe is a paramedic for the East of England Ambulance Service.  He lives in Glemsford, Suffolk and the Weavers’ Way is the latest of his guides to paths around East Anglia.  “I began writing the books in 2018,” he says.  “I was walking the Little Ouse path but, apart from the OS map reference, there was nothing published about it.  I just thought how much I would have appreciated a guide that covered not only the route, but also explained the points of interest and wildlife along the way.”

Along with maps and information about points of interest, the new Weavers’ Way guide includes 15 circular walks taking in some of the best parts of the trail.  The path is named after the cloth industry that was so prominent in North East Norfolk, and it runs from Cromer to Great Yarmouth via places like N Walsham, Stalham, Hickling and Potter Heigham, then through the Halvergate marshes.

“My passion for walking and exploring began as a child,” says Joe.  “Mum would take us to Strumpshaw Fen, the Broads and all the nature reserves.  Our holidays would be to places like the Lake District.  I love being outdoors, discovering hidden corners, or marshes and river banks that are maybe overlooked – and I want to share that passion.”

Steve Haines is the owner of Bittern Books.  “When I first heard about Joe’s books, they were only available online,” he says.  “I was struck by how comprehensive they are, full of fascinating insights, so I encouraged him to get the guides to the Broads printed so we could distribute them to local retailers.” Bittern Books, which is based in Norfolk, now distributes Joe’s books across East Anglia.

“They have been very successful, and Joe’s also produced guides on other local walking routes, such as Wherryman’s Way,” says Steve. “These are all available in good book shops in the region and can also be ordered directly from our website.”

As well as writing guide books, Joe has started to produce videos of some of the walks.  “In the videos I aim to not only show the local countryside but also express the atmosphere I’m feeling at the time – and this is something I’m trying to bring to my guide books, too.  I hope that helps resonate with the reader, and inspires them too.”

Joe has produced a video covering this latest guide book, his love of nature and why he became a paramedic. Released on the Bittern Books YouTube channel, you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpSAIwJ1QqA
