The cleanest crocks: Winterhalter’s free water quality test delivers quality warewash results

It’s not just ‘how hard’ but ‘what sort of hard’ that determines sparkling dishes

We all know that hard water can cause problems with dishwashers and glass washers, leading to smearing and spotting on ‘clean’ ware.  However, not all hard water is the same – in different areas of the UK there are different ratios of the various minerals that make the water hard.  Those ratios make a considerable difference when it comes to getting the best results.  If you know what they are, you can chose the right chemicals, dosage and water pressure to guarantee the best results.

Now Winterhalter is offering all customers a free test during site visits that will determine the exact makeup of the local water – helping to guarantee sparkling clean dishes, cutlery and glasses.  The water quality test establishes the levels of the various minerals and particles that are present in the water, allowing an engineer to set the ideal wash parameters on the machine (time, water pressure and so on) as well as suggesting the best chemicals and the correct dosage.

“We’ve taken advantage of the lockdowns over the past year to train all our engineers and sales personnel in the science of water,” says Paul Crowley, marketing development manager at Winterhalter UK.  “It means they all have the know-how to do the tests accurately, and give expert advice to the customer so that the various elements that make up the perfect wash are in perfect alignment.”

The test can be done very quickly, with the Winterhalter representative taking a sample of local water and checking the results there and then.  Typically a water quality test might be done if a customer is having problems with their warewasher, with no obvious explanation.  “It’s not just ‘how hard’ it’s also important to know ‘what sort of hard’” says Crowley.  “By doing a water quality test at the very start of the buying process, we can ensure the customer gets the right machine, the right chemicals and the right results.”

The most common minerals in the UK’s water are calcium and magnesium, though others, such as iron, are also found in certain areas.  Winterhalter’s water quality test also checks the levels of other particles such as chlorine.  If the local water has a higher ratio of calcium and some iron, then the choice of chemicals, dosage and so on will be different than if there is, say, more magnesium.

For warewasher users who are having problems with deposits and residues on their crockery and glasses, Winterhalter offers another quick test that can establish the reasons and suggest the solution.
