Hoveton Hall Stoops To Conquer

Open air theatre production of classic comedy in spectacular Norfolk setting

DOT Productions bring their acclaimed version of ‘She Stoops To Conquer’ to Hoveton Hall Gardens near Wroxham on Sunday 12th August at 3pm. Oliver Goldsmith’s riotous comedy features characters who wouldn’t be out of place in a “Carry On” film. A practical joke and mistaken identities send them spinning on a collision course of blunders and deception – with the Hall and Gardens making a stunning backdrop to the proceedings.

Tickets are £14, which includes entry to the Gardens themselves, so members of the audience can arrive as early as 10.30am.  Facilities including the tea room, gift shop and plant sales will be open.  The play will be performed on the veranda of Hoveton Hall, with entrance to the auditorium via the Gardens.  Seating will be on grass – ticket holders are welcome to bring their own chairs or cushions if they prefer.

“DOT productions have a brilliant reputation and we’re absolutely delighted to host this production,” says Harry Buxton, estate manager of Hoveton Hall Gardens.  “The combination of the splendid venue, period costumes and sparkling production will make it an absolute treat.”

DOT Productions regularly perform to sell-out audiences, so it’s advisable to book early.  Julia Curle, company producer, explains; “There’s something about a bold comedy that lends itself perfectly to a huge variety of settings. Our venues range from intimate theatres to vast gardens and the characters and story work brilliantly in each one”.

Tickets are available via the Hoveton Hall Gardens online shop, at hovetonhallgardens.co.uk/shop, and through DOT Productions, dot-productions.co.uk, or by calling the box office on 01621 890153.

Hoveton Hall Gardens is one of Norfolk’s best kept secrets.  It offers a rare mixture of experiences for gardeners, walkers and families – on the one hand there are the woodlands, the water garden, with its natural tunnels, bridges, nooks and crannies, and the park.  On the other are the walled garden, with its unique spider gate, the kitchen garden, the 18th century ice well and the early 19th century glass house.  There are also adventure trails and activities for children.

About Hoveton Hall: Set at the edge of the Norfolk Broads, Hoveton Hall Gardens is a delightful mix of formal and informal planting across the seasons.  The Hall itself (which is not open to the public), was built between 1809 and 1812 is attributed to Humphry Repton.  The walled Kitchen Garden and layout of the ‘Spider Garden’ are shown on maps as early as 1841. Extensive work to the Water Gardens was carried out in the 1920s, by Geoffrey Buxton, and much of the collection of rhododendrons and azaleas was planted under his direction by Waterers Nurseries.  The gardens are home to an 18th century ice well and an early 19th century glass house – one of only three of its type in the country.  The Arboretum has over 200 specimen trees and the Kidney Lake attracts kingfishers and grey herons.

The gardens are open Tuesday – Friday and Sunday, 10.30am to 5.00pm.  Last admission 4.00pm.  Hoveton Hall Gardens is situated at the edge of the Norfolk Broads, just north of Wroxham.  Follow brown and white tourist signs off the A1151.
