A bad day for turkeys – but not all of them

The 2009 pardon courtesy of Marvin Joseph -The Washington Post

It’s Thanksgiving in America which means that thousands of turkeys will be killed, plucked and roasted for the table. But some lucky birds escape.

According to the Washington Post President Obama has pardoned Liberty and Peace on Wednesday, the fifth and sixth turkeys to survive the Thanksgiving feast during his time as President.

Strange as it may seem, the turkey pardoning is an annual ritual during which the President shows his power to choose over life and death.

It may have been Abraham Lincoln who pardoned the first turkey way back when…..or it may not!

Either way, nowadays, the lucky turkeys get to live out their days at Mount Vernon – the plantation home of the first President of the United States, George Washington.
