Insurance Broker Gives RAF’s Scooby The Nod

RAF Typhoon Rally Team says thanks to Flux – and by the way, we’re getting a Subaru next year

Chris Daykin, right, Dan Meginnity, left with Craig DarwinRAF Marham‘s Typhoon rally car landed at East Winch Hall when the team came to say ‘thanks’ to Adrian Flux Insurance Services.

Flux has been sponsoring the team during 2009, during which it clinched the class title in the BTRDA National Asphalt Rally Championship at the Keith Knox Stages in Northumberland on 25th October 2009.

"It’s been a great year," says Sgt Chris Daykin, team captain and the man behind the wheel at the rallies. "The whole team has worked really hard to get the car right and we’ve enjoyed our success – but it wouldn’t be possible without the help of companies like Flux, whose support is invaluable."

As a gesture of thanks, Chris handed over a special certificate including a shot of the car in high-speed action earlier this year. Craig Darwin accepted the award on behalf of Flux.

This year the Typhoon Team has been driving a heavily modified ’92 Vauxhall Nova, which is capable of 0-60 in about four seconds and tops out at around 120mph. But next year the Team is moving up to the MSA National Championship and will be needing a much more potent car. "We’ve gone for a Subaru Impreza," says Chris. "In the rallying world it’s an iconic car. We’re hoping to take it to the Isle of Man and enter the prestigious Jim Clark memorial rally."

Craig’s reaction to the new car? "Flux is very pleased to be able to help the RAF, the more so as the guys are having such a successful time. Although insurance-wise, the Scooby is a bit more tricky than the Vauxhall!" In fact, Subarus, or ‘Scoobys’, have a bit of a notorious reputation in insurance circles – a world away from the humble Nova. Luckily, Flux is well aware of Chris Daykin’s ability when it comes to handling the car.

The RAF is keen to encourage its personnel to take part in a wide range of sports, but the Typhoon Team is much more. It’s also a powerful ambassador for the Service and is used as part of the RAF’s recruitment drive. "We travel around the country supporting recruitment at large public events and air shows," says Sergeant Daykin. "We’re seen by hundreds of thousands of people live as well as on TV and in the press."

Editor’s notes
The Typhoon team of RAF engineers consists of Sgt Chris Daykin, Sqn Sgt Pete Taylor, SAC (t) Dan Meginnity and SAC Pete Gwilliam. Their everyday job of keeping the RAF’s Tornado GR4 jets in tip-top condition has proved excellent training to ensure that the Typhoon rally car is tuned up to meet the tough challenges of each national rally stage.
