The CESA Light Equipment and Tableware Forum 2016

12th – 13th April 2016, Whittlebury Hall, Towcester

If there was one thing that stood out at the 2016 CESA LET Forum it was copper.  It’s having a huge moment.  From cookware to tableware, presentation products, glasses, jugs… virtually every exhibitor at the 2016 CESA LET Forum reported a big increase in demand for it, even those that don’t have any copper products.

The LET Forum is the annual two-day get-together for distributors and product suppliers.  It’s where buyers and salespeople can take a good close look at the latest kitchen gizmos, exotic tableware designs and stylish presentation products – and discuss them, in depth, with the supplier.  CESA chair Simon Frost welcomed delegates and thanked CEDA, Cedabond and ENSE for their support of the event.   19 companies booked into the 2016 Forum, as did 60 delegates representing 23 different distributors.

Wood: what a comeback.  Back in the ‘90s it was in danger of disappearing altogether, partly due to the attitudes of EHOs.  These days it’s getting ever bigger, and the Forum saw a host of products, concepts and ideas on show.  “It is really, really current,” said Peter Wakelin of SJH Row & Sons, while Nick Buttle of TG Woodware described the trend as “an explosion.”

Innovation: suppliers had gone to town with new ideas and the 2014 Forum underlined this trend with ‘feature tables’ to spotlight the most exciting products.  “There are more innovations than ever,” said Rob Barnes of Brakes, who has been coming to the event for seven years.  However, it’s not innovation for innovation’s sake: “I’m looking for what’s new,” said Richard Matthews of Bunzl Lockhart, “because that’s what my customers ask for.  They say ‘show me something different.’  The Forum gives me the answers.”

Buffet display: a huge number of new ideas and concepts were on show, designed to enhance front of house foodservice, using both contemporary and traditional materials, from ceramics to melamine to metal to wood, and in a rainbow of colours.

Two themes dominated the 2012 CESA Light Equipment and Tableware Forum.   On the business side, it was all about buoyancy: every exhibitor reported good sales, several said they had enjoyed record growth in recent months.  On the product side, the theme was the big demand for different options for serving food.  Suppliers are responding with a wave of innovative ideas using materials such as wood, slate, copper and steel – as well as glass and china.
