Incomparable work ethic and highest standards mark out kitchen porter king
The search for the 2017 KP of the Year is over. Winterhalter, whose brainchild the awards are, has announced that this year’s winner is José Núnez, who works at The Stafford, the historic 5 star hotel in St James, London.
José was nominated by Mark Surguy, The Stafford’s hotel manager. Judges were impressed by the KP’s initiative – for example, he suggested a new storage solution that reduced breakages significantly. “He has a work ethic that cannot be compared,” said Mark. “He’s always smiling, he holds himself and every member of his team to the highest standards. Shortlist announced for annual KP competition
The search for the 2017 KP of the Year is nearly over as Winterhalter, the company behind the awards, has announced the shortlist for this year’s trophy.
Judges for the 2017 awards include James Horler, chief executive of 360 Restaurants; Richard Davies, executive chef of Calcot Manor Hotel; Anne Pierce, chief executive of Springboard UK; Sara Jayne Stanes, chief executive of the of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts; Hayden Groves, executive chef, BaxterStorey; and Stephen Kinkead, managing director, Winterhalter UK.
Stephen Kinkead was delighted with the continued response to the competition and said: “The calibre of entries just keeps getting stronger and stronger. This year was the most difficult to judge yet.” (more…)
Winterhalter is giving £1 for every KP snap!
22 June 2017 is National KP Day, when the kitchen brigade gets to have a bit of fun and raise cash for Springboard, the charity that helps young and disadvantaged people gain employment in the hospitality industry.

One of these ten superstars will win £10,000 prize
After a marathon negotiation session, the judges of the 2016 KP of the Year have narrowed down this year’s entries to a shortlist of ten. One of them will win top glory and £10,000-worth of prizes.“But all of them deserve enormous congratulation – every one of them inspires their brigade with their dedication and work ethic,” says Stephen Kinkead, managing director of Winterhalter UK, the company behind the awards.
Sara Jayne Stanes, chief executive of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts, was one of the judges. “For the fourth year running we’ve had the most phenomenal number of entries,” she says. “I’m more and more impressed with every entry I read – it’s really difficult to make a choice even for the top thirty, let alone the actual winner.”

Each year the folk at Winterhalter pick one of their own to spend a shift being a KP. It’s partly to promote the KP of the Year Awards, which were conceived by Winterhalter, but also to highlight the hard work and dedication of kitchen porters up and down the land. At the same time, it’s a great opportunity to see a colleague making a fool of themselves, trying to do a professional’s job and suffering big time. In the past the task has fallen to managing director Stephen ‘Kinky’ Kinkead, but he looked like he was starting to enjoy the pain too much – so this year the Winterhalter folk picked business development manager Keith O’Brien. As entries pile in, acclaimed chefs lend their support to KP of the Year 2016
This year marks the fourth Kitchen Porter (KP) of the Year competition and so far it is going great guns. Entries have been pouring in from all across the UK, with many esteemed chefs such as Chris McGowan (Wine & Brine) and Jay Eisenstadt (Stormont Hotel) lending their support.
KP of the Year was developed by Winterhalter UK in partnership with The Caterer as way of recognising and celebrating the challenging, diverse and often overlooked role KPs play in the commercial kitchen. As well as pubs and restaurants, the competition is open to schools, universities, conferences and hotels across the UK. Any establishment with a KP worth praising should consider entering. (more…)

Peter Barnetson of Skibo Castle, Scotland, has been named Kitchen Porter of the Year 2015. The award, which is the brainchild of commercial dishwasher specialist Winterhalter, celebrates the enormous contribution – usually overlooked – that KPs make to the foodservice industry.
Winterhalter calls on businesses to celebrate their kitchen porters
The third annual Kitchen Porter of the Year awards are in full swing, and while the response from the industry has been better than ever before, Winterhalter is trying to encourage more entries from a wider range of businesses.
The Kitchen Porter of the Year competition was launched in 2013 in order to celebrate the work of these overlooked heroes of the professional kitchen.
